In 1915 Sharp’s founder, Tokuji Hayakawa, who had established a metal works in Tokyo three years before, invented the Ever Sharp Pencil, which was later to be the basis for the company’s name and trademark.

In 1964, Sharp went on to develop and mass produce the world's first all-transistor desktop calculator and since then the company has gone on to produce a wide range of electrical products including microwaves and other kitchen appliances, televisions and digital cameras.

Sharp now has 64 offices spread across 30 countries and its products are distributed to 164 countries worldwide. The corporation currently employs 57,500 staff, nearly half of which are employed outside Japan.

Sharp believes that its continued success is due to the its focus on research and development, and the company employs 8,200 researchers so that it can continue to develop unique and functional products.
